Extreme Service Thumb Safety

Featuring full-size thumb shelf

The Extreme Service thumb safety is the result of years of design and testing to develop a thumb safety that is ergonomically comfortable, rugged in construction and offers unique features that solve many of the problems with existing designs. It was designed specifically to benefit shooters who shoot with the thumb riding the thumb safety shelf. It also works great if you shoot thumb down. The H-D thumb safetys are also a huge plus for anyone who has less than a large hand size.

The standard width thumb shelf has an arced shape that is sculpted to meet the "plate" portion of the safety. The shelf is lowered slightly and rotated on the plate to better match up to the human hand. This makes the safety more comfortable in use over extended firing sessions. The width of the HD-451/452 safetys thumb shelf is .330" at the widest point, which makes it .075" wider than my TAC thumb safety.

The positioning of the thumb shelf also helps keep the palm of your hand in deeper, more solid contact with the grip safety, so it's less likely that you'll have a failure to get the grip safety depressed and then keep it depressed, which could render your pistol unfireable at the worst time.

The plate is made thicker than most other brands and is configured so that the safety plunger bears fully on the front of the plate, eliminating side thrust loading from being exerted against your plunger tube which can eventually loosen the tube’s mounting, allowing the plunger pin to climb over the safety's plate, potentially rendering the gun unfireable.

An ample detent pocket and radius give a positive "click" as you move the safety on and off.

The pivot shaft joins the plate with a generous radius which is crucial to prevent stress breakage of the plate/shaft joint as found on other brands.

The blocking lug has an extra fitting pad on the rear of the lug allowing the gunsmith to regulate how far down the thumb safety can swing, which keeps the safety's plate from overhanging the edge of the frame. An industry first!

The rear edge of the plate is beveled and blended where it meets the back edge of the frame so it won't dig into your thumb and web, a feature lacking on many brands.

Machined from barstock alloy steel and heat treated to GI specs; the Extreme Service thumb safety is available in matte black oxide finished carbon steel or matte stainless steel, the Extreme Service Thumb Safety is the perfect design to compliment our Extreme Service Slide Stop.

Another great John H part

Ever since I put John's slide stop in my R1 I was hoping he would come up with a thumb safety to match it.  And this part definitely fits the bill.

Very different from pretty much everything else out there. Not only with the looks but also with that little extra metal he leaves that allows you to set the down travel.  Nice to know its hard against the frame when my thumb is on top holding it down.

Shape and placement of the lever really fits my hand well. Function is great with both strong and weak hand.

Plenty of metal if you want to tinker with the shape but all I did was soften some edges to suit my preferences.

All in all, typical John Harrison, well thought out, well made and well worth putting on your gun!

Great Product...Very Original

I ride the safety on my 1911grip, and the ride on my STI Trojan was just to high. Wanted a lower ride and when I saw this safety I felt the geometry looked good. I couldn't be happier.  The grip is now very natural. Part was easy to instal with minor fitting, and the finish is excellent. The slide release is a very good match and they look great on my 1911. Thanks John!

Ok, so I love the thumb safety! I wanna put them on the guns I shoot that need the grip safety functional. I want 2 more standard ones and a couple of the tactical ones. Please advise how too proceed. Feel free to use me as a reference.

This fits my hand so well when installed on a 2011 size gun!
If you are struggling in any way with your grip or thumb placement on a 2011 pistol have a reputable gunsmith install one of these thumb safeties, you will not look back!

Best thumb safety on the market!!! Period!!

I have used several thumb safeties in the past from all the great makers. Not trying to say they aren’t good too, but there is a huge difference in overall fitment and overall use! This safety can be fit to the gun in every way, especially a true spec frame that is of quality, of course! There is also something to be said about how much more comfortable this safety can be used, especially for a high thumbs shooter. It also helps to engage the grip safety more mindlessly. After I started using these thumb safeties it has been hard for me to use anything else. I almost feel like it makes me shoot. Better which sounds crazy! The amount of detail that goes into one of John‘s parts is unbelievable. In my opinion. His stuff is the best to use. I think it makes a big difference, John, being a shooter himself, designing the parts. He knows what works. Thanks John!!!
